Name of Furbaby’s Doctor: Dr Mandy Burrows and Dr Hilary Chan

Intro from owner about why they came to us:

After unsuccessful treatment of Ollie at our local vet, we asked for another opinion to help our sweet little boy who was in increasing pain and distress with scabs that started on his mouth, then around his eyes and paws.  I had heard about Dr Mandy, the dermatologist and that she consulted from several locations in Perth.  We took the earliest available consultation at Animalius in Bayswater.   Dr Mandy provided us with on-the-spot initial opinion; plan to diagnose Ollie and same day skin biopsies.  The whiteboard looked like a veterinarian case study lecture but showed us the diagnostic possibilities, treatments plans and prognosis.  We have since seen Dr Mandy at both Animalius and Murdoch University locations for follow ups and more ‘whiteboard musings’ as she has plotted the path to Ollie’s recovery…which has been remarkable and such a relief for our Ollie and us!

Diagnosis:

Mucocutaneous lupus erythematosus with severe secondary Pseudomonas bacterial overgrowth

Treatment:

prednisolone and cyclosporin until remission; currently only receiving cyclosporin

Resolution:

Ollie had a six-month history of severe ulcerative and crusting dermatosis affecting his face, his interdigital skin, perineum, and tail base. Previous diagnostic testing had shown heavy growths of Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas, but he showed limited improvement with antibiotic therapy. Histopathology of carefully selected skin biopsies was critical to an accurate diagnosis. Clipping and hydrotherapy of the crusting dermatosis was essential as well as carefully bandaging and dressing his feet. A month later Ollie was in complete remission and is much happier! He continues to visit us regularly to monitor his skin and for any adverse drug events.

Why we love ADC:

Our experience at Animal Dermatology Clinic has been inclusive, animal care focussed and professional with written information after each consultation.   We have had follow up phone calls from Dr Mandy into the evening with results, and staff have regularly followed up seeking progress updates.  The staff have displayed a genuine love of animals and their welfare.
