Is your horse experiencing food allergy?

Food allergy is a skin disorder that is caused by a substance found in your horse’s diet. This is rare, but can affect horses of any age, breed or sex. The most common symptoms of a horse food allergy is itchiness, hives, or a combination of the two. The face, neck, trunk and rump are most commonly affected. Some horses may run their tails excessively. Severe itchiness can lead to self-mutilation and bacterial infection.

How do we diagnose your horse? We recommend an elimination diet followed by exposure testing for four weeks. Novel protein diets must be tailored for each horse based on dietary history. Your horse should be fed dietary substances free of additives. If the skin condition improves, the original diet is re-introduced. If the skin disorder relapses, the diagnosis is confirmed.
